It's difficult to talk about sounds or to describe them. We don't have the words for it. And so you use colours and other images to help understand what the other person wants of a sound that only they can hear in their head.

Michael Metzler is a professional bellmaker, percussionist, and the owner of Der Glockenladen in Mitte, Berlin. His shop occupies a narrow basement space and is filled to the brim with as many bells and as one can imagine. For a place with so much percussive potential, however, it is mostly calm and quiet inside unless Michael is demonstrating his musical talents to random strangers like me. My interview with him can be found in the audio player below and in the short video to the left.
