when you hear the sound of soul music you’ll know it’s soul because it gets you off your feet and onto the dance floor, your body yearns for movement and you don’t really know how it knows to do so, but you go along with it. you surprise yourself with your funky moves and before you know it, everyone else too is flailing about without a care. and then there’s the slow jams… and by slow they mean real slow. a yearning to take it down three notches kind of slow. a smooth and soulful slow. a “darl’, let me tell you how much you mean to me” slow.

i’ve been watching some bergman films lately so as to reminisce about my buñuel/bergman class last semester, to prep for my swedish film course in lund next semester, and to get used to the different intonations in spoken swedish – all this while gawking at sven nyqvist’s gorgeous cinematographic work.

i discovered peter broderick and nils frahm’s music separately, but them playing together is really something else.
